A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a secure network within the public Internet. It can save companies millions of dollars compared to dedicated networks. This concept was new in 1998 when this booklet was written. It was used by AT&T to educate clients and managers about this innovation. 40,000 copies of the booklet were distributed.  Although a portion of this piece is clearly dated, it has been recently recommended by several technical publications as a clear explanation of the concept for technical as well as business managers.
